    Mid-December Sister Maria-Martha came to visit Kosovo and the recent developments at Duarte Plote Meshire, which she had run for the past 15 years and recently had handed over the responsibility of ist daily management to Rudolf Krasniqi. Concerned about the little progress made during that period for the least fortunate in the Society, Sister Maria Martha asked the Austrian Ambassador, Mr. Johann Brieger for help to organize specific appointments.   • 18th-19th December 2014: Visit of General Othmar Commenda at KFOR HQ

    The Austrian Chief of Defence Staff, General Othmar Commenda visited the Austrian KFOR troops in Kosovo on December 18-19. He was briefed by COMKFOR Major General Francesco Figliuolo and the Austrian Ambassador to Kosovo, Mr. Johann Brieger about the overall security situation and the political developments. MG Figliuolo also thanked General Commenda for the very important and substantive Austrian contribution, both in numbers and in quality.

  • 17th December 2014: Press Conference with Austrian and German Ambassador

    On December 17th the Austrian Ambassador Johann Brieger and the German Ambassador Angelika Viets paid a visit to the Minister for Interior, Mr. Skender Hyseni. After congratulating the Minister for his new office and wishing him well with the many challenges at hand, the Ambassadors confirmed the ongoing commitment to support Kosovo's path towards the EU. Currently the most pressing issue was the very high numbers of asylum seekers both in Austria and in Germany.

  • 11th - 12th December 2014: Visit of ADA managing director Dr.Martin Ledolter in Pristina

    A two day visit of ADA Managing director Dr.Martin Ledolter in Kosovo, where he met the president of Kosovo, H.E. Atifete Jahjaga, new Minister for education, General Secretary for Ingetration, the Austrian Ambassador Dr.Johann Brieger and his wife Roswitha, EU delegation representatives, Mayor of Maqiteve and many more. Mr. Christian Geosits, representative of ADA in Kosovo, also introduced him locally to several ADA projects: IRDS (Care Austria), InterDev (UNDP), SUSI-LDF, a bio egg farm in Maqiteve and EDI Project in Fushe Kosove.

  • 8th December 2014: Visit of AUA Manager Walter Reimann in Pristina

    Walter Reimann, Managing director of AUA (Austrian Airlines) paid a visit to Kosovo to get an on-site impression of Austrian Airlines in Kosovo. He met not only with many clients but also tried to get information from various institutions to implement improvements of the current service of Austrian Airlines here at the region.   • 7th - 9th December 2014: Ulrike Lunacek in Pristina

    Just in time for the constitution of the Kosovo Assembly and the vote on the Government, the Vice-President and Special Rapporteur of the European Parliament on Kosovo, Ulrike Lunacek visited Pristina. After six months of waiting the new government of Kosovo faces many challenges. "We will closely monitor the implementation of the program presented by the Prime Minister in Parliament, notably on the fight against corruption, the stimulation of economic development and Kosovo's European path", said Ulrike Lunacek.

  • 4th December 2014: OeKG celebrates Nikolaus with their members

    Also this year OeKG - the Austrian Kosovo Association - celebrates Nikolaus with their members and other guests at Villa Germia in Pristina. On Thursday, when it started to become dark outside, all the children were waiting impatiently for Nikolaus and some were even afraid that 'Krampus' may come and get them. Mrs. Roswitha Brieger, President of OeKG, welcomed the guests, thanked her wonderful team (Avdyl Cetaj, Andreas Fritz, Sabine Putscher) and her husband, Ambassador Dr.Johann Brieger for their ongoing support and Raiffeisen Bank Kosovo for sponsoring this event.

    Karlheinz Kopf, 2nd President of the Austrian National Council, brought a dozen Austrian businesses with him to Kosovo. "In the long run, investments and the creation of jobs are most important ingredients for the successful development of any state.   • 8th November 2014: Marine Corps celebrated the 239th B-day in Pristina

    Every year the Marine Corps celebrates their B-day with a Ball. This year the Ball was held at Emerald Hotel and also Mrs. Roswitha Brieger, President of OeKG and the Austrian Ambassdor Dr.Johann Brieger have been invited by the US Ambassador Tracey Jacobson and her husband David Baugh to this special event.   • 30th October 2014: Premiere of 'Your stories, my story'

    On Thursday, 30th October 2014 at 8 pm the Premiere of "your stories, my story", choreography & concept by Darrel Toulon took place at the National Theater in Pristina. This event is supported by "Culture for all", an EU funded project managed by the EU Office in Kosovo in partnership with the National Ballet of Kosovo and the Austrian Embassy. In a deeply moving performance the dancers told their own stories and left nobody untouched. Well done. Congratulations!

  • 27th October 2014: Austrian National Day Reception in Pristina

    Already the 4th Austrian National Day has been celebrated by the Austrian Ambassador, Dr. Johann Brieger and his wife Roswitha together with many guests in Pristina. The first time (2011) the cocktail was held at the National Museum, from 2012 until 2014 the cocktail took place in Sheshei 21. As all the other years before many guests attended this event, amongst them the President of the Republic of Kosovo, H.E.   • 9th Oct.2014: Charity Project of OeKG - Rebeka Rexhepi is on her way to recovery

    Rebeka is back. A cheerful Rebeka and her mother Xheraldine visited on Thursday Ambassador Johann Brieger and his wife Roswitha at the Austrian Residence to personally thank them, the OeKG and the Austrian People for the great support and perfect treatment Rebeka has been given at the hospital in Linz/Austria.   • 7th October 2014: Visit of Anton MATTLE, 1st Vicepresident of the Assembly in Tyrol, to Kosovo

    President Anton Mattle from Tyrol paid a visit to Kosovo from Oct. 6.-8. to see for himself recent developments and progress achieved in Kosovo. Mr. Mattle gained first hand impressions from visiting different projects in agriculture supported by the Land Tyrol in Stublla (pig farm, sheep farm and a raki distillerie). Peter Logar and Andreas Leichter from Austria initiated these Projects with local families. Mr. Mattle was positively impressed by the personal engagement of whole families in these projects, an important ingredient for sustainable success.

  • 4th October 2014: Change of Command NCC

    On October 4 the Change of Command from AUTCON 30 to AUTCON 31 took place under perfect conditions. Col. Franz Josef Madner took over the command from Lt.Col. Norbert Klein, who has served in Kosovo for the last six months. AUTCON 30 did an excellent job and continued to keep up the very high standards expected from Austrian soldiers abroad. We are happy to see Lt.Col Klein and his team off well and without major injuries. We wish them all the best back home and welcome Col. Madner and an even stronger Austrian KFOR contingent with now 530 troops in theatre.

  • 1st October 2014: Transfer of Authority KFOR DCOM

    On October 1 Brigadier General Anton Wessely concluded his tour of duty after 12 months in Kosovo. Twelve months that saw a lot of progress and improvement on the ground. A highlight was certainly the excellent conduct of elections throughout the whole of Kosovo, including the north. As a regular visitor to our OeKG-events, both as speaker and as guest, we wish him well in his new job in Vienna and welcome his successor, Brigadier General Anton Waldner, also from Austria.

  • 30th Sept.2014: Official opening of the K & K cemetery in Peja

    In the presence of Minister Agim Ceku (Minister for KSF) and the Mayor of Peja, Mr. Gazmend Muhaxheri, the military cemetery in Peja has been handed over to the Municipality of Peja by the Austrian Ambassador Johann Brieger and the Hungarian Ambassador Lorant Bàlla on Sept. 30th.     On September 26th the Bear Sanctuary Prishtina moved into the next phase. 4 hectares of enclosures were added and bears released into a perfect environment, where they can roam freely, hide in the bushes or scratch their back at a tree trunk.     In the afternoon the Austrian Embassy Pristina invited to a reading of Josef Winkler, a famous Austrian writer, at the University Hasan in Prishtina at the Amphitheater 39, philological faculty and then for continuation of the on-going discussions to coffee and cake at the Austrian Library in Pristina. The listeners who had no time in the afternoon, could also listen to Mr. Josef Winkler in the evening at Qendra Multimedia (Rr.   • 4th to 7th September 2014: Weltbundtagung in Baden

    Dieses Jahr fand die Weltbundtagung im Congress Casino Baden, Kurpark statt. Das Programm begann am Donnerstag mit einem Stadtrundgang inkl. Besichtigung des Kaiserhauses oder einer Wein Garten Wanderung auf den Spuren der Reblaus. Am Abend hatten die Teilnehmer die Moeglichkeit einer Operettenauffuehrung der Sommerarena der Buehne Baden beizuwohnen. Die letzte Auffuehrung von "Giuditta" mit der Musik von Franz Lehar zog alle Zuhoehrer bzw. Zuschauer in einer ausverkauften Sommerarena in ihren Bann.

    Die erste Septemberwoche fand in Wien die jaehrliche Botschafterkonferenz statt, zu der weltweit an die hundert MitarbeiterInnen von Botschaften, Vertretungen, Generalkonsulaten und Kulturforen anreisten, um die aktuellen Entwicklungen zu analysieren und die strategische Ausrichtung zu eroertern. Eroeffnet wurde die Konferenz durch den Generalsekretaer Michael Linhart und durch Bundesminister Sebastian Kurz, welcher auch am ersten Abend die Botschafter und deren Ehegatten/innen in den Marmorsaal einlud.

  • 16th to 24th August 2014: DokuFest in Prizren

    This year already for the 13th time the DokuFest, an international documentary and short film festival, took place in Prizren. DokuFest has grown into the largest cultural event in Kosovo with seven cinemas including four in the open air, set amongst mosques and churches that testify to this town's rich heritage. One screen sits atop the medieval Prizren fortress, another in a square near the Ottoman-era Sinan Pasha Mosque. For just over a week, DokuFest takes over Prizren, with more than 230 documentaries from different countries.

    On 17th July 2014 the third Edition of the European Summer Music Academy (ESMA) in Pristina started. Music students from Kosovo and other countries had the unique opportunity to follow master classes led by renowed professors from a number of European countries.   • 26th June 2014: Medica Kosova invites to an opening of an exhibition

    Opening of a painting exhibition - "A presentation of pain and hurt soul of Kosovar women who survived sexual violence during the war" - organized by Medica Kosova, established 1999. The Mission of Medica Kosova is to achieve the reduction of traumatic symptoms caused by the war, especially to victims of violence, as well as victims’ integration in social and public life. And one of their therapy methods is art therapy and in this particular case, art therapy with painting and the outcome is now shown at the National Library of Kosovo.

    In a series of collaborations with its member federations Independent Organization for Sport Education in Kosovo (OESK) organized a joint event with Mini Golf Federation of Kosovo (FMGK). This activity took place from 21/22.06.2014 (Saturday to Sunday) in Pristina Golf grounds in Llapnasellë. OESK along with FMGK organized a mini golf tournament for the best students of 8th grade classes (boys and girls) from eight different schools in the Municipality of Prishtina.

    Ambassador Brieger paid a visit to Mayor Agim Bahtiri in Mitrovica South and had an interesting discussion about the strong focus Mayor Bahtiri is paying to the economic development of the municipality, economic development going hand in hand with zero tolerance on corruption.   • 6th May 2014: Visit of Mayor of Mitrovica North

    On May 6th Ambassador Brieger paid a visit to Mayor Goran Rakic in the municipality of Mitrovica North. As a young municipality all the institutional infrastructure still needs to be developed. The requests and needs are numerous and manifold, but there is no quick fix. It needs time to build trust and it is necessary to take your own people along, which is not an easy task given the magnitude of changes the municipality and its people are faced with.

  • 14th April 2014: Opening of the 1st Austrian Film Week in Kosovo

    On April 14th the 1st edition of the Austrian Film Week was launched at the ODA Theatre in Pristina. Ambassador Brieger welcomed the numerous guests for the presentation of "Amour", the highly acclaimed and award winning masterpiece of Michael Haneke.   • 18th Dec. 2013: Christmas Celebration at KFOR HQ with Austrian soldiers - unfortunately without our Defense Minister

    On Wednesday, 18th December 2013, unfortunately our Defense Minister, H.E.Gerald KLUG, could not land in Pristina because of dense fog, even though he tried several times. Therefore the Austrian KFOR soldiers had to pre-celebrate Christmas without the Minister. Nevertheless, they all enjoyed together with the Austrian Ambassador Johann Brieger and his wife, NCC LtCol Kohlweg and with many others an excellent meal. At the end they also received a gift from Austria, a tabletop football and of course, the Austrian Ambassador to Kosovo and LtCol Kohlweg were amongst the first players.

As a special tribute to a great work done by the Austrians, not only the Austrian Ambassador, Brieger and his wife, but also COM KFOR MG Farina and DCOM KFOR BG Wessely personally joined the celebrations.     With 'Kaiserwetter' (sunny and extremely warm for the season) in Pristina the Austrian National Day celebrations 2013 were hosted by Ambassador Johann Brieger and his wife at Sheshi 21 on October 25th. More than 300 guests enjoyed a lovely evening with two pieces from the Viennese operettas 'Die Fledermaus' (Johann Strauss) and 'Die lustige Witwe' (Franz Lehar), performed by the Kosovan singers Riad Imeri (tenor) and Egzona Gervalla (soprano) as special highlights. Guests also had the possibility to indulge in Austrian delicacies (Leberkäse, Schnitzel, Würstel).

    Just after the presentation of the progress report by the EU and before the start of SAA negotiations and the municipal elections, Ambassador Kickert visited Kosovo to have an exchange of view on recent achievements and challenges ahead.   • 18. Oktober 2013: Wasserkraft in Peja - Unterzeichnung Servitutsvertrag zw. der Gemeinde Peja u. Kelkos Energy Peja

    Am 18. Oktober kam es in der Gemeinde Peja unter Beisein des österreichischen Botschafters Dr. Brieger und seiner Gattin zur Unterzeichnung des Servitutsvertrages zur Flächennutzung für den Kraftwerksbau zwischen Bürgermeister Ali Berisha und Dir. Georg Wöber von Kelkos Energy Peja. Mit diesem Schritt wurde ein solider Grundstein für den Bau eines Wasserkraftwerkes im Rugovatal gelegt, wonach unter Einhaltung der entsprechend strengen Umweltbedingungen künftig Energie für rd. 75.000 Haushalte gewonnen werden soll.

    Dr. Brigitte Bierlein, Vizepräsidentin des österreichischen Verfassungsgerichtshofes besuchte am 14. Oktober die Festveranstaltung zur Eröffnung des 4. Jahres der Verfassungsgerichtsbarkeit im Kosovo. Sie konnte sich während des kurzen Aufeinthalts erste Eindrücke der soliden Arbeit der Verfassungsrichter während der letzten 4 Jahre im Kosovo machen und zeigte sich positiv beeindruckt über den professionellen Zugang.     Together with Minister Fadil Ismajli, Ambassador Brieger held a keynote speech at the opening of this years' international conference on the Energy Market South East Europe. Specialist from the private sector, politicians, representatives from international institutions and NGOs from the region but also from several EU-Member States attended the conference. Discussions over a two day period focused on critical questions of energy security, possibilities of cross country cooperation within the region but also other elements from the EU 20-20-20 targets.

    On October 7th the American Austrian Foundation together with its Kosovan partners organized the 2nd Satellite Symposium on Diagnostic Imaging in Pristina. The symposium was officially opened through keynote addresses by the Minister for Health, Dr. Ferid Agani and the Austrian Ambassador to Kosovo, Dr. Johann Brieger.   • 1st October 2013: First visit to KOSAN Mining in Kamenice

    On October 1st the Austrian Ambassador Brieger and his wife Roswitha paid a visit to the KOSAN mining complex owned by the Austrian investors Sabine Putscher and her husband Robert. They are extracting an excellent quality of Andesit, transforming it into different shapes which can be used in dwellings for the construction of terrasses, decorating walls or even in the production of tarmac or as foundation for roadworks. The Ambassador and his wife were very impressed by the fantastic job done so far by the Putschers and wished them a lot of success for the future.

    On Monday September 30th the Change of Authority from BG Bojan Pograjc to the Austrian BG Anton Wessely took place at KFOR HQ. COM KFOR General Farina thanked the outgoing DCOM for his very important contribution during the last 13 months. His personal contacts and negotiating ability to representatives in the north were very valuable indeed. BG Anton Wessely was welcomed in the presence of the Ambassadors from Austria and Slovenia, all KFOR commanders of the different units and of the numerous national contingents. We all wish him well in this important task.

    Am Montag, den 23.September 2013, besuchte die Präsidentin von OeKG, Frau Roswitha Brieger, gemeinsam mit ihrem Gatten, dem österreichischen Botschafter von Österreich im Kosovo, drei Wiederaufbauprojekte des Landes Tirols. Das letzte Projekt, welches an diesem Tag besucht wurde, war eine Schnapsbrennerei (Raki) in Stublla. Nach zahlreichen Gesprächen mit Personen vor Ort besteht großer Bedarf für qualitativen Schnaps. Die Leute in Stublla und Umgebung, hier vor allem aus der Diaspora, sind bereit entsprechend dafür zu bezahlen. Im heurigen Jahr wurden einmal die Grundlagen geschaffen.

    Ein weiteres Wiederaufbauprojekt vom Land Tirol ist der Schafstall, welcher nach österreichischen Normen errichtet wird. Die Ausführung ist von hoher Qualität und die Schafe werden in Kürze dort einziehen (ca.3 Wochen). Durch einen Beschluss des Tiroler Landtages führt das Land Tirol seit dem Jahr 2000 Wiederaufbauprojekte im Kosovo durch. Die Projekte umfassten vor allem die Bereiche Bildung, Kommunalwesen, Landwirtschaft und Behindertenwesen.     On Thursday evening, the Professors' Gala concert took place in Red Hall. This time a few new countries contributed to the European Summer Music Academy: Apart from Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and Kosovo we also had professors from Hungary and Luxemburg.     Amateur Artist Dimitar Boyanov Dimitrov displayed his art work at the European Center for a good cause, with support of the Bulgarian Embassy. The first painting was sold to the Bulgarian Ambassador H.E. Bobi Bobev and his lovely wife Zdravka, followed by the Austrian Ambassador H.E. Johann Brieger and his wife Roswitha and then to the Czech Ambassador H.E.Jiri Dolezel and his wife Stana and it went on and on until nearly all paintings were sold.     On Tuesday evening the German Embassy, the Austrian Embassy and the Czech Embassy jointly hosted a Music Soirée which took place for capacity reasons at the German Ambassador's Residence. The first musical contribution was by Michal Kanka, cellist from Czech Republic and he played wonderfully 1.Gigue, 2.Sarabande 3. Courante from J.S. Bach in C major for cello solo.     On Monday, 15th July 2013, the two Austrian music professors, Oto Vrhovnik (Saxophonist) and Bertram Egger (clarinetist) , who are in Pristina at the moment for the Summer Academy, gave a small private spontaneous pre-concert at the Austrian Ambassador's residence after a friendly and relaxing dinner.   • 8th June 2013: Simply frustrating: Truck with humanitarian goods stopped at Hungarian/Serbian Border

    Friday evening a truck load full of privately collected items (toys, clothes, shoes, school bags, etc.) for the most disadvantaged children in Kosovo was stopped at the Hungarian - Serbian Border. The private initiative Toys4Them Tour wanted to bring more than 100 boxes and bags as a donation to those least fortunate. They have been turned back by Serbian customs officers despite full documentation and support by the Austrian Embassies in Belgrade and in Prishtina. It is a pity that even for humanitarian aid causes, this incident did happen.

Animal welfare organisation brings the last eight restaurant bears to safety in under 24 hours Prishtina/Vienna, 1st June 2013 – Today in Kosovo an emergency rescue team from the international animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS freed the last restaurant bears from captivity and transferred them to the new FOUR PAWS BEAR SANCTUARY.     On 22nd May 2013 Ari and Arina could be rescued from Mini Zoo Shqiponja in Prizren, where they had to live on 20 square meters concrete enclosure which is located directly above kennels at ground level containing dogs and wolves, which howl loudly and constantly. Both bears are extremely distressed given the fact that they had to live there all their lives, which is 9 years now in this tiny place with the constant noise.     One of the Ball Committee members, Gwyneth Letherbarrow, has been very busy since the beginning of the year with 'The Learning Institute in Kosovo' (LIK). Ambassador and Mrs Brieger attended the launch of LIK's most recent project 'Language Fusion' which is aimed at promoting and providing linguistic excellence, amongst others, in the Albanian, English and Serbian languages.     On April 16 the Austrian Ambassador, Mr. Johann Brieger and his wife visited the Loyola Gymnasium in Prizren that celebrated its 8th anniversary. After watching high quality artistic performances by the Loyola students, Father Happel and Mr. Schwarzbach guided the Ambassador through the school, which is well equipped with modern infrastructure and extremely well maintained.     As you might all remember the 1st Wiener Ball held on 27th of April 2012 in Pristina was a Charity project. All proceeds have been donated to the Paedriatic Clinic in Pristina. After some discussions with the clinic to identify very specific needs for the children it was decided to directly order blinds and have OeKG pay for those.
